Let's see first how things work in the Software development lifecycle.

When Developer writes the code on an IDE tool like VSCode or Eclipse, it is committed to an SCM tool like GitHub which manages our code and keeps our version updated.

Then after every time code is committed on the SCM tool, it will trigger a continuous pipeline that will use Jenkins as CI/CD Tool. When the pipeline is triggered it will deploy the project or Software on the Deployment platform like Kubernetes(k8s), Docker, GKE, Cloud Run, ECS and AKS and others that are closely integrated with Jenkins using plugins.

So Above was a brief description of how the Software development lifecycle works. We have used third-party tools for the completion of every phase like taking from using an IDE to committing to GitHub and using CI/CD automation tools like Jenkins. All the things for which we are using a third-party tool are now comprised in GitLab.

The Comprised abilities of GitLab:

  1. Version control: GitLab provides robust version control capabilities that allow developers to manage their code changes, track progress, and collaborate effectively.

  2. Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD): GitLab's built-in CI/CD pipeline enables developers to automate testing, building, and deploying their applications, streamlining the development process.

  3. Issue tracking: GitLab's issue tracking system helps teams manage their projects by tracking bugs, feature requests, and other tasks, providing visibility into the development process.

  4. Code review: GitLab's code review features enable developers to collaborate on code changes, review code, and leave comments to improve code quality.

  5. Collaboration: GitLab provides a range of collaboration features, including wikis, project boards, and group-level permissions, allowing teams to work together effectively.

  6. Security: GitLab offers robust security features, including code scanning, access control, and vulnerability management, to help protect applications and data.

  7. Customization: GitLab's open-source platform allows users to customize and extend the platform to meet their specific needs.

In conclusion, GitLab is a powerful platform that can help teams improve their software development process, streamline collaboration, and increase productivity.
